Our History
The story of Greater Pine Grove AME Church through the years
Our Journey of Faith
Founding Years (1871-1900)
Greater Pine Grove AME Church was founded in 1871 by a small group of devoted Christians who sought to establish a place of worship for the African American community in Mobile, Alabama. The church began with just 25 members who initially gathered in the home of Deacon James Williams on Pine Grove Avenue. Under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Johnson, the first pastor, the congregation worked tirelessly to build a small wooden structure that would serve as their first church building.

Growth and Development (1900-1950)
The early 1900s through 1950s marked a period of significant growth for Greater Pine Grove. Under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Anderson (1900-1935) and Rev. William Carter (1935-1952), the church expanded its membership to over 200 people. During this time, the church established its first choir, Sunday School program, and women's missionary society. In 1948, the congregation raised funds to purchase additional land and began construction on a larger brick building to accommodate the growing membership.
Civil Rights Era (1950-1970)
During the Civil Rights Movement, Greater Pine Grove played an important role in the struggle for equality and justice. Rev. Joseph Martin, who served as pastor from 1952 to 1968, was actively involved in local civil rights efforts. The church hosted community meetings, voter registration drives, and provided support for those participating in demonstrations. Many members of the congregation participated in marches and other civil rights activities, demonstrating their commitment to social justice and equality.
In 1965, the church completed construction of its education building, which housed classrooms for Sunday School and space for community programs. This expansion reflected the church's growing role as both a spiritual center and a hub for community service and activism.
Community Outreach (1970-2000)
The latter part of the 20th century saw Greater Pine Grove expand its community outreach efforts. Under the leadership of Rev. Charles Wilson (1968-1985) and Rev. Robert Davis (1985-2000), the church established food pantries, clothing drives, and after-school programs for neighborhood children. In 1978, the church founded the Pine Grove Community Development Corporation, which worked to address issues of housing, education, and economic development in the surrounding area.
The church also experienced spiritual renewal during this period, with revival services that brought many new members into the congregation. By the end of the century, Greater Pine Grove had grown to over 500 members and had established itself as a cornerstone of the community.

Modern Era (2000-Present)
In the 21st century, Greater Pine Grove has continued to evolve while remaining true to its historical mission. Rev. Mary Thompson, who served from 2000 to 2010, led the church through a major renovation of the sanctuary and the implementation of new technology for worship services. Under her leadership, the church also expanded its youth ministry and established a scholarship fund for college-bound students.
Since 2010, Pastor M. Hitchens has served as pastor, bringing new energy and vision to the congregation. During his tenure, the church has embraced digital ministry, including online streaming of services, which became especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The church has also strengthened its commitment to social justice, participating in community organizing efforts around issues such as education, healthcare, and criminal justice reform.
Today, Greater Pine Grove AME Church stands as a testament to the faith, perseverance, and dedication of generations of members who have contributed to its growth and development. With over 700 members, the church continues to be a vibrant spiritual community and a force for positive change in Mobile and beyond.
